The Mets have had an embarrassing first 2 games of the 2024 season.
They got 1 hit on Opening Day with Jeff McNeil getting into a shouting match with Rhys Hoskins over what he determined was a dirty slide, leading to the benches clearing.
They followed that up with Rhys Hoskins dominating them, going 3 for 4 with a HR and 4 RBI. Hoskins hit a 2-run single his first time up, McNeil had a chance to even the score with the bases loaded in his first at-bat but came up small.
The Mets embarrassed themselves even more by throwing at Hoskins after he already killed them the whole game. They should’ve hit him in his first plate appearance, not after he beat their head in.
Some positives to take from the first two games: Starling Marte, Francisco Alvarez, and Brett Baty. Marte and Alvarez have hit the ball hard consistently and Baty had a 3-run HR off a tough LH reliever.
Marte and Baty are two huge swing players for the Mets this year, if they produce the Mets’ ceiling will rise considerably.
The big negative was the performance of Luis Severino. He was throwing batting practice up there. Fastballs with no life and hanging sliders the entire game. He was lucky he didn’t give up 10 runs.
The Mets need Severino to be good for the rotation to work, he’s the one high-upside arm they have.
Normally, I’d say it’s just 2 games but the way these games went makes Sunday’s game a must-win. The Mets have gotten punked and need a win for some good feelings.
I’m tired of the Mets being the butt of the joke.
